Waiting for Sunshine by Jane Sanderson

Who would name a child Sunshine, then give her away?

Chrissie has always wanted to be a mother. After months of trying to adopt, she and her husband Stuart finally get the news that a little girl named Sunshine is waiting for them.

The child comes to them without a history, and it feels like a fresh start for all of them. But when fragments from Sunshine's previous life start to intrude on her new one, the little girl's mysterious past quickly becomes Chrissie's greatest fear....

Waiting for Sunshine is the first book I have read by author Jane Sanderson, the synopsis had me instantly intrigued and sounded like nothing I have read before.

We meet Chrissie and Stuart who have been on a long treacherous journey in their yearning to adopt a child and finally they look are going to meet their new daughter, a big-hearted little girl named Sunshine but if they thought the journey to adoption had been hard things are about to get a whole lot harder as Sunshine’s past looks like it is coming back to cause problems along the way.

This book does highlight some of the struggles that families go through on their journey to adoption and shows how hard it is for the children to adapt to their new surroundings and Sunshine didn’t have the easiest of transitions when her foster family wasn’t the best of help. Sunshine stole the show in this book she was such a bold and bright character who brought so much to the storyline from tantrums and tears to singing and laughing as she found her place in her new family. Chrissie is really well developed too and she has so much love to give which is clear from the outset of the book and I was routing for her to get her happy ever after that she dreams of.

The storyline follows adoption processes, relationships, friendships, mystery and hidden secrets so the book is full from start to finish with so much going on. I was surprised at the turn of events half way through it began to feel a little bit like a genre switch with a crime and mystery taking place but I followed along picking up the clues that were being left to paint a picture of Sunshine's history. It did feel a little bit like two stories in one and that the author was trying to put so many twists and turns into the book but she really didn’t need to, her writing alone is so easy to follow and her characterisation is skilful as well as the adoption storyline alone being captivating, I still really enjoyed the book and flew through the story I just think the author needs to realise sometimes less is more and to believe in her skilled storytelling.

I was kept guessing the whole way through which kept me on my toes and eagerly turning the pages unearthing one bit of history or one secret after another. As unexpected as this book turned out to be I will definitely be looking forward to more books by this author.
