Another Night, Another Day by Sarah Rayner

Three people, each crying out for help . . . There's Karen, worried about her dying father; Abby, whose son has autism and needs constant care; and Michael, a family man on the verge of bankruptcy. As each sinks under the strain, they're brought together at Moreland's Clinic. Here, behind closed doors, they reveal their deepest secrets, confront and console one another and share plenty of laughs. But how will they cope when a new crisis strikes?

I have just read my first ever book by author Sarah Rayner, I have had Another Night Another Day on my to be Read pile for a couple of months now and I was looking forward to starting this one as I love finding authors who are new to me.

This was a very powerful and poignant read because the storyline follows people who have mental health issues, which is something that I can relate too. Michael, Karen and Abby are all very down to earth, every day people who you would not stereotypically assume have any kind of mental illness. Karen is a single mum to two children after her husband died so suddenly, Abby is has a son who has autism and needs constant round the clock care and Micheal is about to lose his business and could be facing bankruptcy. The three characters come together during their time at Morelands Clinic where they must learn to talk about their problems, thoughts and feelings.

Mental health seems so stereotypical in the real world so I love that the author has brought together a group of characters who are so "normal" to show that it can effect anyone. Each of the characters are struggling in their day to day lives in different ways but in ways that I am sure quite a few of us can relate to. I really warmed to all three of the main characters in this book firstly because they were all so well developed and secondly because I could relate to their characters too.

I didn't realise until I read the reviews of this authors previous books after finishing this one that her previous books tell the story of two of the main characters in this book Karen and Abby, so I can't wait to now go back and read the previous books. I didn't feel like I was missing out having read this book as a standalone and I felt emotionally connected to both of the characters but I can imagine reading the previous books first getting to know the characters on a deeper level would make this an even more poignant read.

I loved the authors writing style she managed to hook me in right from the get go and held my attention the whole way through with no low parts of the book. The book felt like it had been very well researched when it comes to the care for working with people with mental illness as well as from the other side of how the characters felt too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was a well written, thought provoking, informative and poignant read that I highly recommend. I am pleased I found another great author whose books I will enjoy, I can't wait to read another one.
